Public transport in North Cyprus is available in the form of mini buses known as a Dolmuş. Prices are moderately fair at approximately 14tl per person for a local trip. The services are limited and do not go up and through villages and to tourist places, so you are better advised to hire a car to go to many of the main attractions of Cyprus. The bus routes are privately leased from the North Cyprus government. You will be able to spot the Dolmuş (bus) as they are commonly white mini buses with the destination written in the window. If you find a bus stop you can wait here, if not and you see one coming you can just flag it down they will stop for you.
Buses are infrequent and do not run to a strict timetable. As a guide line they run about every 20mins to 30mins between towns and villages. More busy parts run every 10mins to 15mins and further afield around every hour. Winter services slow down around 7pm and summer time at 8pm or end after this time. There are no timetables for these buses and they do not go to the majority of the tourists attractions in North Cyprus, tending to just run between the main towns and villages.
Taxis are another option when it comes to transportation in North Cyprus.Rural taxi charges are reasonable, but it is wise to agree on a price with your taxi driver before you set off on your journey. There are no meters in rural taxis and these taxis can only be found at designated taxi stands.
If your holiday hotel or villa is not near a taxi rank, it might be better book car hire online before you arrive in North Cyprus, and drive yourself there from Ercan airport.
Shared taxi services are also available in North Cyprus and if you and a group of other people are travelling to the same destination you can share the fare. This is very common in North Cyprus and is widely operated.
Urban taxis provide a 24-hour service and these taxis are equipped with meters. The price you will pay for your fare begins as soon as you enter your taxi so make sure you know exactly where you want to go.You can book your taxi by phone or hire it from their base station.
In North Cyprus you will find several car hire companies operating a large car fleet. At competitive prices, they match good quality services and customer care. Both manual and automatic cars are available with air-conditioning especially useful during hot summer days when temperature rises above 30 degrees. Majority of the cars are right hand drive, since traffic on the island moves on the left. Left hand drive cars are to get too, although little in number. Car rates vary according to the rental and season period. or renting a car in North Cyprus you have to be over 25, however some exceptions can still occur.
You need to own a valid driving licence from any country in the world or international driving licence. Only the approved person(s) at the time of rental can drive the car. Further requests are to be agreed with your car hire agent. Rental cars in Northern Cyprus have distinctive red number plates, and are known as “Z” cars, usually with the logo of the company placed on the car. Please note that you are not allowed to cross the border to Southern Cyprus once your car was rented from the North. If you still wish to cross to the South you can drive up to the check point and park your car at the border. From there you can walk across.
You’ll discover quickly that public transport is very limited with only buses and service taxis available. Although these might appeal to your budget, it does restrict your freedom to explore North Cyprus at your leisure, especially when you factor in the lack of train network and no domestic air services.
One option is to rent a bicycle. There are many ordinary roads paralleling the motorways, so you can cycle safely to wherever it is you’re heading. However, if you’re not used to cycling, you’ll quickly find that your legs will pay the price, even if your wallet doesn’t, and what should be a holiday can soon become a chore if you’re relying on a bike as your sole method of transportation.
You can rent or buy yours. There is bicycle rental available in North Cyprus. Various rental companies offer bikes for rent to explore the beautiful landscapes and attractions of the region.
